Description:A walk through survey was conducted at Standard Industrial Minerals (SIC-3295) Bishop, California, in August 1982 to evaluate kaolin (1318747) bagging operations in conjunction with a NIOSH study of technology for control of airborne dust in dry chemical bagging and filling operations. Exhaust ventilation was provided at the packer spout, with a second capture hood on the floor beneath the spout. A squeegee and shovel were used to clean the concrete floors. Water sprinkling was used to reduce fugitive dust from haul roads and areas between buildings. Preemployment examinations were given to all workers. Personal protective equipment required included hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs in noise hazard areas, and safety shoes. The Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) training program was followed. The author concludes that although the company meets MSHA standards, its control measures are not ideal. Potential dust exposures can result from spilled products during bagging. The floor hood on the packer appears to be ineffective, especially during bagging of kaolin containing cellulose. The facility is not recommended for an indepth survey. [Description provided by NIOSH]
