Description:A walk through survey was conducted at EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (SIC-2822), Beaumont, Texas in August, 1985. The purpose of the survey was to obtain information on the 1,4-hexadiene (592450) production process and evaluate the potential for exposure to 1,3- butadiene (106990). Bulk samples of 1,4-hexadiene and Nordel synthetic rubber was analyzed for residual 1,3-butadiene. Company air monitoring data was reviewed. 1,3-Butadiene was reacted with ethylene (74851) to produce 1,4-hexadiene, which was refined, and then polymerized to produce Nordel. Engineering controls consisted of single mechanical or oil/flushed dual mechanical seals on 1,3- butadiene pumps. The company was proposing to install aviation type valves in the 1,3-butadiene unloading area. No 1,3-butadiene was detected in bulk samples of 1,4-hexadiene or Nordel. Company air monitoring data showed mean 1,3-butadiene exposures of 0.48 part per million. The personnel department maintained records on all current and retired employees. All new employees were given physical examinations. Current employees received periodical physicals, the frequency being based on age. The authors conclude that the facility is suitable for an in depth survey. They recommend that the proposed program to install aviation type valves in the 1,3- butadiene unloading area be implemented. [Description provided by NIOSH]
