Description:Workers exposures to fluoranthene (206440) (Flu), pyrene (129000) (Pyr), benz(a)anthracene (56553) (BaA), chrysene (218019) (Chr), and benzo(a)pyrene (50328) (BaP) were surveyed at LaJolla Village Condominium where new roofing was being applied by a crew of three workers employed by the Asbestos Roofing Company (SIC-2952) in San Diego, California on November 10, 1977. One layer of felt was applied by hand. Bulk samples of hot asphalt (8052424) analyzed with benzene (71432) had less than 630, 130, 63, 320 and 190 micrograms of BaP, BaA, Flu, Pyr and Chr per gram, respectively. Analysis using cyclohexane (110827) indicated concentrations of 70, 150, 70, 400, and 200 micrograms of BaP, BaA, Flu, Pyr and Chr per gram, respectively. Coal-tar-pitch (65996932) samples had concentrations of 0.04 to 0.37 micrograms BaP per cubic meter (m3), m3, 0.19 to 1.40 micrograms Pyr per m3 and 0.12 to 1.00 micrograms Chr per m3. The authors conclude that assuming an 8 hour exposure at the concentrations measured, two of the three personal samples were above the OSHA standard of an 8 hour time weighted average of little research has been performed to characterize the chemical constituents of asphalt fumes, especially with regard to carcinogens. They recommend engineering controls, standard work practices and training programs for workers. [Description provided by NIOSH]
