Description:An industrial hygiene walk-through survey of Monsanto Commercial Products Company (SIC-3674) of St. Peters, Missouri was conducted on September 1, 1978 as part of a NIOSH investigation of photovoltaic solar cell manufacturing technology. The company has been in operation since 1960 producing electronic and solar grade silicon (7440213) by the Czochralski and Zone Refining techniques, polycrystalline-silicon (7440213) by the Siemens process, and partially finished light emitting diodes and displays of gallium- arsenide (1303000) (GaAs) and gallium-arsenide-phosphide (GaAsP). The author rated the overall health and safety program as good for this company, which employs more than 1,000 people. He recommends that safety programs be addressed to the deficiencies noted, a formal audit by experienced corporate health and safety personnel, additional measurements of arsenic (7440382) exposure potential by skin contact and air samples, and monitoring for nitrogen-oxide (11104931) at the face of the hoods in the slice cleaning area.
