Description:Worker exposures to silica (7631869) dust were surveyed on August 25 to 27, 1975, at two facilities of Pine Hall Brick and Pipe Company (SIC-3255) in Madison, North Carolina. Dust concentrations ranged from 0.126 to 2.025 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/CuM). The content of free silicon-dioxide (7631869) ranged from 9.5 to 17.1 percent. Three samples exceeded the OSHA standard (10mg/CuM divided by the percentage of silicon dioxide plus 2). The automatic dust removal process used in building 4 was better than the manual process used in building 3A. The author recommends that sandroom operators in facility 3A be provided with respiratory protection, and that controls be developed in facility 4 to prevent dust from entering the control room. Automatic dust handling equipment does not decrease dust concentrations but can decrease actual worker exposure time. [Description provided by NIOSH]
