Description:Worker exposures to perchloroethylene (127184) (PCE) were determined at Exclusive Cleaners (SIC-7216) in Chicago, Illinois, on July 20, 1979. The company employed 4 workers. First aid equipment was available and two workers had formal first aid training. There was no routine maintenance program. Emergency respiratory protection was not available. Concentrations of PCE for six 5 minute peak samples ranged from 173 to 525 parts per million (ppm). A 15 minute peak sample was 168ppm. The OSHA standard for an 8 hour time weighted average exposure is 100ppm, not to exceed 300ppm for 5 minutes during any 3 hour period. The author concludes that exposures to PCE at this company exceed OSHA standards. He recommends that exposures be limited as much as possible by means of engineering controls such as exhaust ventilation, use of emergency respiratory protection, use of protective clothing, periodic inspection of storage containers, equipment, piping, and valves, provision of preplacement physical examinations, and worker education regarding PCE hazards.
