Description:A walk through survey was conducted at the Abbott Laboratories (SIC- 2834), in North Chicago, Illinois to determine the feasibility of including this facility in the NIOSH mortality/industrial hygiene study of workers exposed to ethylene-oxide (75218) (ETO). The facility produced chemicals, pharmaceuticals hospital products, and diagnostic products. ETO has been used in this location since 1955 to sterilize medical products, primarily intravenous devices. The 1978 to 1979 8 hour time weighted average (TWA) results of exposure were approximately 50 parts per million (ppm). Similar data from 1984 showed TWAs of below 1ppm. The facility did meet some of the requirements for inclusion in the study in that the worker population could contribute at least 400 person/years to the study, adequate personnel records were available to identify who had been exposed, and no known leukemogen exposures were possible. However, due to the fact that department and job codes used in the personnel files were not sufficiently specific to distinguish between workers in potentially exposed and nonexposed areas of the facility, the authors do not recommend the facility for inclusion in the study.
