Description:Raw materials, equipment, manufacturing methods and work practices were investigated to identify possible health hazards at the Lauderdale Garment Corporation (SIC-2327) in Ripley, Tennessee, on November 1, 1979. This company was included in the initial phase of a NIOSH survey of the men's apparel industry. About 347 people were employed at the facility. No formal medical, health or industrial hygiene program was available. A physician provided emergency medical care. No industrial hygienist or safety engineer was employed. Medical examinations were not required. A safety committee was established. Material was marked, cut, sewn and pressed. The fabric consisted of cotton blends and polyester knits. Guards were used on needles and belts but not on hand wheels. Plastic eye shields were used on bar tacking machines. Air conditioning and exhaust fans provided ventilation, and a sprinkler system provided fire protection. The general noise level was 84 decibels on the slow response A scale in the sewing area. No bis- chloromethyl-ether was found in the pressing areas. The author concludes that health hazards may exist from formaldehyde (50000) vapors. He recommends further studies at this facility.
