Description:Health and safety hazards of paint materials were investigated at Peterson Builders, Incorporated (SIC-3731) in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin on December 15, 1978. The company was under investigation for inclusion in a NIOSH epidemiological, industrial hygiene, and medical study of health hazards in the painting trades. Approximately 731 employees worked in the boat production yard. The company had no industrial hygiene program. The safety engineer investigated accident reports and met with the safety committee every 2 months. An occupational nurse was employed. Personnel records were maintained with personal, salary, performance ratings, and medical releases from private physicians. No records of time lost or frequency of illness were maintained. A large room was used for indoor paint spraying operations and some painting was done outdoors. Personal respirators were used and ventilation in painting areas was poor. The authors conclude that Peterson would be an excellent facility to study from an industrial hygiene standpoint, and because of the large amount of paint used each year and the steady amount of work.
