Description:A walkthrough industrial hygiene survey of the Dow Chemical Company Allyn's Point styrene butadiene (SB) latex producing facility (SIC- 2821) in Gales Ferry, Connecticut, was performed on September 11, 1985. Factory history and operation, production processes, workforce, engineering controls, medical programs, safety programs, and industrial hygiene programs were examined. Bulk polymer samples were analyzed for free monomer emanation at ambient, highest polymer processes, and highest estimated end use temperatures. Quality control testing included purity and dimer content of incoming 1,3- butadiene (106990) and residual 1,3-butadiene content of the latex. Of 164 workers, 20 production and 13 administrative personnel worked in the SB area where 1,3-butadiene was used. Personal monitoring conducted from 1975 to 1985 showed the mean 8-hour time weighted average exposure was 0.25 parts per million (ppm). Area monitoring showed the highest concentration, 0.56ppm, in a reactor and a stripper area. Preemployment physicals and a voluntary health surveillance program were used. Workers were trained in safety and industrial hygiene. SB latex at ambient, process, and end use temperatures showed free monomer to be below the 0.04 nanograms per milligram limit of detection. The authors conclude that this production facility is a candidate for inclusion in an indepth exposure survey regarding 1.3-butadiene. [Description provided by NIOSH]
