Description:Worker exposures to ethylene-oxide (75218) were determined at the Union Carbide Corporation facility (SIC-2869) in Texas City, Texas, on June 8 and 9, 1977. The survey was part of a NIOSH industry wide study of the health effects of occupational ethylene-oxide exposure. The company employed about 2,400 workers. The company maintained a formal safety and industrial hygiene program and medical services were provided by two fulltime physicians, four nurses, and employees trained in first aid. Air sample analysis revealed concentrations of 80 parts per million (ppm) of ethylene-oxide at the delivery pump and 40 to 50ppm between the number one and two reactors in the linear alcohols area. Other samples indicated readings of 15 to 35ppm of ethylene-oxide in the Ethyleneamine Unit. No ethylene- oxide was detected at the tank car unloading operation. The authors conclude that due to the low concentrations of ethylene-oxide sampled, further evaluations for ethylene-oxide at this facility is unwarranted. [Description provided by NIOSH]
