Description:A visit was made to the Avtex Filters facility located in Nitro, West Virginia for the purpose of evaluating the site for possible inclusion in the cross sectional medical and reproductive study of carbon-disulfide (75150) (CS2). The facility produced rayon staple fibers and a byproduct, sodium-sulfate (7757826). Forty different grades and types of fibers were produced. The firm employed 1050 workers. About 500 of these work in production, 400 in engineering and maintenance, and 150 in the office. Potential health hazards observed during the visit included exposure to carbon-disulfide, hydrogen-sulfide (7783064), chlorine (7782505), noise, sodium- hydroxide (1310732), sulfuric-acid (7664939), particulate matter, lead (7439921), styrene (100425), and methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933). Housekeeping was generally fair and a new ventilation system had been phased in in 1974. The authors conclude that the facility could provide a study population for the CS2 study; problems of worker mobility could complicate the assignment of worker exposure categories.
