Description:Worker exposures to silica (7631869), styrene (100425), benzene (71432), and ethyl-benzene (100414) were surveyed at Pomona Pipe Products Company (SIC-3547) in Gulf, North Carolina. The company employed 170 persons. Ground shale from the mine was crushed, ground, screened and extruded to manufacture pipes. A local physician was on call. Preemployment physical examinations were given to all employees. Protective hats, gloves, respirators and ear protection devices were provided. All personal samples of respirable silica dust were below the present OSHA standard of 10 milligrams per cubic meter divided by the percent of silicon-dioxide plus 2. Concentrations of styrene, benzene, and ethyl-benzene were well below the OSHA standard of 100ppm for each agent. The author concludes that although the exposures were within the OSHA standards, a health hazard from silica dust exists. He recommends increased air circulation in the kiln area and reduction of dust concentrations in the grinding operation area. [Description provided by NIOSH]
