Composite industrial hygiene walk-through survey report of reinforced fiberglass manufacturers.

  Walk through surveys were made at reinforced plastic and fiberglass manufacturing facilities in Washington state for the purpose of becoming familiar with the process of reinforced plastic production and to assess employee records at these sites for possible inclusion in a styrene (100425) mortality and industrial hygiene study. The volume of production and techniques used were evaluated. The basic operations were very similar in these ten companies and two of the ten were deemed suitable for inclusion in the larger study. The remaining eight were deemed not to be suitable based on the amount of historic employee information, number of employees, time since initiation of production, and the similarity of production techniques. Five of the eight facilities were engaged in production of reinforced plastic and fiberglass boats, one produced reinforced plastic pipes and joints, one produced reinforced plastic truck bodies, and one produced reinforced plastic sheets. Results of area environmental air sampling at four of the sites ranged from 10.7 to 201.3 parts per million styrene vapors and from less than 5.3 to 156.6 parts per million acetone (67641).
