  In response to a request from the National Labor Management Committee for the Custom Woodworking Industry (NLMC/CWI), a survey was undertaken of working conditions at Mielach Woodwork Midwest, Elgin, Illinois. The company was an architectural woodwork manufacturer. Possible hazards at the site included exposure to total dust, dust size, organic vapors, and noise. Fourteen personal air samples were collected for total dust. A total of six personal air samples for dust size were also collected. Through the use of local exhaust ventilation, airborne dust exposures were well controlled. Hand sanding operations in the assembly area, however, were not controlled through similar means, and the existing local exhaust ventilation for the molder was not sufficient. Exposure to organic vapors was either very low or nondetectable. The woodworking machinery and spray finishing apparatus was noisy and resulted in one exposure that exceeded the OSHA permissible exposure limit for continuous or intermittent noise of 90 decibels-A. Inadequate local exhaust ventilation rates were noted for a belt sander and a table saw. The authors recommend that a respiratory protection program and a hearing conservation program be established.
