Description:A walkthrough survey of American Edwards Laboratories (SIC-3841), Irvine, California, was conducted in August, 1984. The purpose of the survey was to determine the feasibility of including the facility in a NIOSH industrywide mortality/industrial hygiene study of ethylene-oxide (75218). The facility used a 12 to 88 percent mixture of ethylene-oxide/dichlorodifluoromethane (75718) to sterilize thermodilution catheters, flow directed catheters, artificial heart valves, and other products. Personnel records existed only for current workers and workers terminated since 1972. Records for workers terminated before 1972 had been discarded. For most jobs or departments, it was not possible to determine whether individual workers were potentially exposed to ethylene-oxide. Company industrial hygiene monitoring data showed time weighted average ethylene-oxide exposures below 3 parts per million (ppm). Short term (15 minute) exposures, however, ranged from 0.3 to 66ppm. The facility implemented a respirator program in 1978. Wearing protective gloves was also required if sterilized products were to be handled prior to being aerated for 48 hours. The authors conclude that the facility will not be included in the NIOSH study due to the inability of the personnel records to identify a cohort of potentially exposed workers.
