Description:A walk through survey was conducted at the American-National Can Company (SIC-3411, SIC-2851, SIC-2893) located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to determine the potential for exposure of workers to acrylates or methacrylates. Acrylated base coats, inks and varnishes have been used at this facility since 1978 in the manufacture of decorated metal containers. The company has one printing press line for radiation curable acrylated formulations in which are located two lithographic printing presses for applying inks and varnishes. Two inks or one ink and one varnish are applied wet on wet in each application. Infrared and ultraviolet curing units follow the printing presses in the production line. There are local exhaust units for these curing units. If there is to be more than one color on the product, the metal sheets are returned to the feeder for reapplication. Eleven of 163 employees have potential contact with acrylates during the performance of their jobs. One case of chemical dermatitis has been reported at the facility, but this was due to contact with a cleaning solvent. The company has a safety program at the facility and maintains personnel records for each employee. [Description provided by NIOSH]
