An industrial hygiene study of ethylene dibromide at Dow Chemical U.S.A. in Magnolia, Arkansas.

• Description:
  Worker exposure to ethylene-dibromide (106934) (EDB) and general hygienic conditions were investigated at the Dow Chemical Company (SIC-2869) in Magnolia, Arkansas on June 7, 8, and 9, 1977. A total of 16 personal air samples were collected at the panel board, surveillance, and urine field technican stations and from the chemical and maintenance employee. Twenty three employees worked with EDB. Preemployment and annual medical examinations were provided by the company, a medical staff, located in the corporate offices in Michigan, administered a hygiene program, and air was regularly monitored for hazardous substances. All EDB concentrations were below the OSHA recommended 20 parts per million threshold limit for an 8 hour time weighted value. The authors conclude that the company control methods were adequate to maintain exposure values under the Federal standard. A potential for exposure exists in the panel board technician stations. They recommend that technicians for sample preparation and control be upgraded. [Description provided by NIOSH]
