Description:The purpose of this walk through study was to determine the extent of exposure to N-nitroso compounds during the manufacturing of cutting fluids at Norton Company, Worcester, Massachusetts. The facility was engaged in manufacturing construction products, grinding wheels, and industrial ceramics; facilities for producing metalworking fluids were also located at the site. Both the coolant manufacturing facility and a machine shop were studied. Bulk samples of raw materials were collected at the coolant manufacturing facility. Two types of metalworking fluids were manufactured at the coolant facility, each with several formulations. No N-nitroso compounds were detected in the air samples, thus indicating that N- nitroso compound contamination was limited to the grinding fluid. The exposure of the workers was primarily through the skin contact with the fluids. The grinding fluids contained substantial amounts of N-nitrosodiethanolamine (1116547) (NDE1A) and some unidentified materials. The grinding fluids were diluted 20 times with water before use in the machines, thus drastically reducing the exposure to NDE1A. The concentrations of NED1A in the diluted fluids did not exceed 11 micrograms/milliliter. [Description provided by NIOSH]
