Description:A walk through survey was conducted on April 8, 1980, to evaluate methods of containment, environmental monitoring, and health surveillance for production and research processes utilizing recombinant DNA techniques at Genentech, Incorporated (SIC-2834) in San Francisco, California. Process operations with potentials for worker exposure, engineering controls, validation procedures, work practices, emergency and accident procedures, medical surveillance, environmental monitoring, number of exposed workers and employee training and education were assessed. The author concludes that microbiological research requires containment features sufficient to exclude entry or escape of contaminants in the system. Attention to exposure control must receive equal emphasis as process integrity and production development. Safety and health, medical surveillance and emergency programs should be implemented immediately. Emergency guidelines safe laboratory practices, personal hygiene habits and practices, protective clothing and equipment requirements, maintenance procedures, and medical surveillance are needed.
