Description:A walk through survey was performed at the Optical Coating Laboratory, Inc., City of Industry, California, to investigate hazards involved in developing energy technologies. Finished silicon solar panels were produced, starting with ingot growing. All 100 production workers were women. No routine industrial hygiene measurements were taken. A preemployment physical examination was required, with subsequent examinations being given on request. Two Czochralski silicon crystal growing units were used. The vapor space around the crucibles was argon blanketed under a slight positive pressure, causing deposition of silicon-oxide (7631869) on the inner wall which was removed with a dry towel. This cleaning process had a potential for silicon-oxide exposure. Some ingots were mechanically ground to produce a smooth cylinder surface of uniform diameter in a highly automated operation. The detergent cleaning operation for the wafers was poorly hooded. The main production process used for diffusion junction formation involved the chemical vapor deposition of phosphorus in an open tube furnace and appeared to be a well controlled operation. Wafer etching and cleaning operations involved the use of acetone (67641), isopropyl-alcohol (67630), sulfuric-acid (7664939) and hydrogen- peroxide (7722841). This room, although employing the use of three hoods, appeared inadequately ventilated. The wafer contact application, soldering and panel assembly operations appeared well controlled.
