  A walk through survey was conducted to assess conditions and extent of use of 4,4'-methylenedianiline (101779) (MDA) at Ameron Company (SIC-3079, SIC-2851), Brea, California, on February 13 to 14, 1984. MDA was used primarily as an aromatic amine curing agent along with an epoxy resin for making filament wound pipe and pipe fittings. About 150 employees were involved in the operation. MDA was also used in the protective coatings division where it was blended with silica sand to formulate a dry mixture for later mixing with epoxy resin. Only three employees were potentially exposed to MDA in this operation. Preemployment (but not periodic) medical examinations and liver function tests for those assigned to work with MDA were administered. Personal protective equipment included overalls, special shoes, cotton caps, rubber gloves, safety glasses, and a disposable dust/mist respirator. Company air sampling data showed MDA concentrations ranging from less than 0.00007 to 0.025 parts per million. There is no current OSHA or NIOSH standard for MDA.
