Warning! Dangers to teens working at pizza restaurants.

  The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services is alerting pizza restaurants to the deaths of two teenagers who worked in pizzerias. Similar conditions may exist in many restaurants that may be dangerous to youths and other employees. A 15-year-old boy was killed when he was crushed in a pizza dough mixing machine. He had worked for two weeks, mostly sweeping and cleaning the pizzeria. The boy was alone in the kitchen as the restaurant was closing for the night. He was cleaning the mixer when he was caught between the spinning beater and the bowl. The mixer had a faulty switch and had not been de-energized prior to cleaning. A 17-year-old pizza delivery driver was killed in a car accident while delivering a pizza. This was his first night at work at the pizzeria, and he was using a family car to deliver pizzas. He was driving down a road in the rain when he spun out on a curve on the wet road and hit a tree. He died later that night in the hospital. He was an inexperienced driver and his car's tires were in poor condition. Description provided by NIOSH
