Description:Traumatic experiences contribute to conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance use disorder. Research supports that children who undergo circumstances such as child abuse, poverty, or even emotional or physical neglect are more likely to have poor health outcomes and display unhealthy behaviors. Adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, are the terminology that encompasses these circumstances. Felitti and Anda describe the advanced understanding of the detrimental and additive effects of ACEs in their landmark study of middle-class Kaiser-Permanente patients from 1998. Since this time, increased awareness of traumatic childhood events has slowly permeated the healthcare industry. One prominent pediatrician, Nadine Burke Harris, MD, advocates for the use of screening questionnaires as one way to explore nonmedical reasons for health and social issues in children. However, recognizing that these events can be different when considering low, middle, and high socioeconomic situations and populations, there are several versions of the ACE screen to account for this diversity. This chapter provides a brief historical perspective of adverse childhood experiences and explores the present understanding of screening, mitigation, and prevention modalities. It is meant to assist with increasing awareness, encouraging utilization, and improving health and behavioral outcomes of children, adults, and communities. [Description provided by NIOSH]
