Toolbox Talk Guide: Rigging Slinger Killed by Swinging Log in Yarding Turn

  INSTRUCTIONS: Hold the guide with this side facing you and the other side facing your crew. Then read the story. A 30-year-old logger, working as a rigging slinger in a yarding operation, was killed when he was struck by a swinging log in a moving turn. He was setting chokers out in front of the turn when the choker setter working with him was ready to send a turn to the landing. He told the choker setter to signal to go ahead on the turn, though he was still out front, within 15-25 feet of the turn. As the turn moved, the end of a 37-foot log dug into a bank, and swung into the air and crashed down on the rigging slinger. So here are some ways we can prevent something like this from happening where we work: Get in the clear before any lines are moved. Follow-up on training and supervision for safe practices, even with experienced workers. ASK: "Does anyone have more ideas or comments to share?" Pause for discussion. Then see if there are ways to take action. END WITH ACTION PLAN (ideas for what to ask or say). "Can anyone describe what it means to be "in the clear"? Or the safest location when a turn moves?" "How can an unsafe work habit be passed on to less experienced workers?" Discuss what could lead to a similar situation at your current site. Express your commitment to supervising and enforcing safety rules for both experienced and inexperienced workers. Commit to follow-up at the next safety talk. Description provided by NIOSH
