FACE Facts: Mechanic Killed! Truck Falls off Lift

  In a recent incident, a 46­year­old mechanic, Ernesto M.* (* Not the victim's real name), died when a truck he was repairing fell off a lift. The truck was too long, and the arms of the lift did not reach the proper lift points. Ernesto's employer did not have safety or training programs. WHAT WENT WRONG? The wrong type of lift was used. There was no safety program to make sure workers used lifts correctly. WHAT SHOULD BE DONE? Only use lifts that can support a vehicle at the points designated by the vehicle manufacturer. Employers must have an Illness and Injury Prevention Program (IIPP) to make sure workers are fully trained and follow safe work practices. Description provided by NIOSH
