FACE Facts: Highway Worker Killed! Struck by Truck While Picking Up Traffic Cones

  In a recent incident, a 27­year­old laborer, Manuel H.*(* Not the victim's real name), died when a pick­up truck hit him while he was picking up traffic cones on an interstate highway. Manuel was in a man-bucket attached to the rear of a traffic control truck. The pick­up truck knocked down over 300 feet of traffic cones before running into Manuel. WHAT WENT WRONG? Traffic was moving too fast. There was nothing to protect Manuel from the pick-up truck. The driver of the pick­up truck broke several traffic laws. The highway was poorly lit. WHAT SHOULD BE DONE? Reduce the speed limit in work zones. Use traffic trucks with impact attenuators. Put Highway Patrol officers near work zones. Use artificial lighting to improve visibility.
