Description:Integrated geophysical techniques and geotomography are being investigated by the Bureau of Mines for ground control applications in the detection of underground voids, fractures and other geologic hazards. Shallow underground workings and caved zones were successfully detected using ground-probing radar (GPR), and combined microgravity, pole-dipole and dipole-dipole electrical resistivity techniques. For monitoring stress conditions in underground mine structures, a new method utilizing surface wave . dispersion characteristics was shown to have potential for indicating the zones of stress relief, stress concentration .and the undisturbed stress zone in the vicinity of mine workings. Lastly, the utility of geotomographic techniques is discussed for locating fluids and fracture zones underground, examining stress distribution in mine structures and detecting old workings or voids in coal seams. The geosensing technology under development at the Bureau has wideranging applications in ground control for the detection of geologic hazards, evaluation of stress conditions, and the assessment of the stability of mine structures.
