Description:Workers in the coal mining industry can be exposed to elevated levels of respirable coal and silica dust, which can lead to the development of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis or silicosis. These lung diseases can be disabling or fatal depending upon the dose of dust exposure that is received. Research into the development of dust control technologies for coal mining operations was initiated in the United States Bureau of Mines and continues today within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. A summary of the historical developments of this dust control research and its impact on the coal mining industry will be provided. [Description provided by NIOSH]
