Description:Welcome to The Seventh Annual Institute on Coal Mining Health, Safety and Research. We are delighted to have such a good show of participants at this year's conference. A fine program has been assembled by the Advisory and Planning Committee. We know your stay here during the next two and a half days will be well worth your while. We are quite honored to have a distinguished array of speakers for the Keynote Session this year. In keeping the introductions to a minimum, and also in response to the evaluation for the conference last year, we will keep them quite short. Our first speaker is Dr. Thomas V. Falkie, Director of the Bureau of Mines. Dr. Falkie has a distinguished educational background with a Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree and a Doctorate Degree from Penn State University. All of these degrees are in Mining Engineering. Dr. Falkie was appointed Director of the Bureau of Mines on March 4, 1974. As the Director of the Bureau of Mines he administers a program that has a budget in 1976 of $159 million-quite a responsible position! Dr. Falkie will be speaking to us this morning on "Some Innovative Health and Safety Research and Development Programs." I would like you all to welcome Dr. Falkie. [Description provided by NIOSH]
