Description:Noise exposure is a significant problem in the construction industry with over 73% of workers being exposed to noise levels over the NIOSH recommended limit of 85 decibels. As a result, up to half of construction workers suffer from some level of hearing loss due to occupational noise exposures. Using CPWR's Trainers and Researchers United Network (TRU-Net) model, 4,195 construction workers were surveyed on their receipt of noise and hearing loss prevention training, receipt of hearing tests, and hearing loss. To understand worker characteristics associated with self-reported receipt of noise training, hearing tests, and hearing loss, we examined descriptive statistics and bivariate associations between pairs of variables. We also conducted stratified analyses to understand potential confounding of these associations by the length of time working in construction. In addition we explored what prompted a worker to receive a hearing test and if those who received hearing tests were more likely to self-report hearing loss. This presentation will compare the self-reported hearing loss of the survey population to other hearing loss data in construction and discuss how the results demonstrate the importance of noise and hearing loss prevention training and medical surveillance to prevent exposure and further injury.
