Description:The 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, and resulting conflicts in the Middle East, has led to the longest prolonged military deployment in U.S. history. As of 2020, over 1 million soldiers have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. This seventeen-year conflict is longer than that of U.S involvement in World War II and the Vietnam War combined. Characteristic of these operations termed Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation New Dawn (OND) is the frequent reporting of respiratory symptoms among active-duty troops and returning veterans. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs Burn Pits Registry, 26.2% percent of 150,000 registered military personnel who were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan self-reported new-onset, deployment-related respiratory symptoms due to poor air quality, and 14.5% percent of a New York-based cohort reported new-onset asthma symptoms. ...
