This document is intended as a reference guide to assist you with incorporating HIV screening into your daily office practice. Note that laws governing HIV screening differ from state to state.
A summary of major revisions to previous CDC guidelines: • Opt-out HIV screening is now recommended in all health-care settings; • Opt-out screening means patients must be notified that screening will be done; they may decline testing; • All patients at high risk for HIV infection should be tested at least annually; • Separate written consent for testing is not recommended; • No prevention counseling is required in conjunction with HIV screening; and, • HIV screening should be included in routine prenatal screening, with repeat screening in the third trimester for high-risk women; the notification and consent guidelines above apply.
