Description:By a combination of chemical, chromatographic, and spectroscopic methods, 22 benzo[b]thiophenes were identified in Wasson, Texas, crude oil. Five compounds comprise 82 percent by weight of the total benzothiophenes identified. A marked order of preference for the position of the alkyl substituents on the benzothiophene ring was noted: 2 > 3 > 7 >/= 4 > 6. Although no alkyl substitution in the 5-position has been found such substitution could be present in small amounts. [Description provided by NIOSH]
