Dynamic Mass Measurement Techniques

  This chapter describes three techniques for aerosol mass measurement, each of which could be most appropriately described as a short-term batch process. Only one of them approaches the instantaneous measurements characteristic of optical or light-scattering techniques, but all of them can determine the mass of collected aerosol samples in intervals convenient for many applications. These three techniques are the beta gauge, piezoelectric crystal, and tapered-element oscillating microbalance (TEOM). These techniques have been used to measure a variety of aerosols. Various applications of the measurement techniques are discussed or referenced in the text. [Description provided by NIOSH]
