  • Description:
The Sunshine Education and Research Center (SERC) at the University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida was established in 1996 to focus on interdisciplinary training of occupational safety and health professionals, research training, continuing education, outreach and research. The SERC is located in the College of Public Health and offers academic training programs collaboratively with the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Arts and Sciences and Engineering including Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health Nursing, Occupational Health Psychology, Occupational Medicine Residency, and Occupational Safety. Continuing education, a pilot project program and outreach activities contribute to the creation of high visibility and impact for the SERC throughout the region and nation. It serves as a resource for industry, labor, the health care sector, government and the public. The SERC continues to follow its goal of promoting workplace safety, health, and well-being through education, research, continuing education and outreach. There is strong interdisciplinary coordination and integration. Programs addressing diversity and minority recruitment continue to be evaluated and enhanced to strengthen the focus on minority recruitment and retention. Five strategic initiatives continue to be addressed: [1] Operating mechanisms to renew the leadership and management structure; [2] Research training experiences to improve the training of our student trainees; [3] Interdisciplinary activities to enhance interaction of the disciplines; [4] Student recruitment to be more competitive in the national market; [5] Diversity recruitment to bring a broader cultural perspective to the professions in OH&S. There are numerous community-focused partnerships including the OSHA 21d consultation program, OSHA Training Institute, other ERCs and NIOSH. The SERC will continue to assess the needs of the OS&H practitioners in the state and region and continue to champion continuing education, outreach and research that best impact the practitioner's environment to meet their needs for the 21st century. Dissemination of research at the state and national levels included 232 opportunities as publications (51), in-press (14), presentations at state and national conferences (112), posters at state and national conferences (35) and proceedings (1). An additional 118 research and evidence-based posters were presented at annual SERC Research Training Poster Symposia bringing the total SERC research work products to 350.
