Elevated Blood Leads in the Iowa Construction Industry

  The prevalence of elevated blood lead (7439921) concentrations in Iowa construction workers in selected high risk trades including painters, ironworkers, plumbers and pipefitters, laborers, and electrical workers was investigated. Venous blood samples were collected from 432 workers and analyzed for lead. Questionnaires were used to obtain information on demographics, symptoms, occupational history, work practices, personal protective equipment, and training. The geometric mean blood lead concentrations were 5.9 micrograms/deciliter (microg/dl) for painters, 4.4microg/dl for plumbers, 7.6microg/dl for laborers, 5.2microg/dl for ironworkers, and 2.4microg/dl for electricians. Lead levels were also found to be associated with the type of construction projects (especially bridge renovations and home remodeling), work activities, hobbies involving lead, and the age of the worker's residence. The authors recommend that education programs be expanded, that current regulatory requirements be enforced, that specification for lead hazard identification and management programs be included in bid specifications prior to contract awards, that engineering controls be developed, that lead containing products be identified and so labeled, and that the levels of support from the public health department be increased.
