Description:The toxic effects of inhaled methyl-methacrylate (80626) (MMA) vapor in Sprague-Dawley-rats were studied. Animals inhaled 116 parts per million (ppm) of MMA 8 hours daily, 5 days a week, for 45 or 90 days. Body weight, daily food intake, fecal fat content, intestinal absorption, plasma lipid concentration, and tissue fat concentrations were measured at various intervals. Ninety day inhalation of MMA affected tissue weight, blood chemistry, metabolic behavior, and hepatic and ciliary function in rats, but did not depress body weight or epididymal or popliteal fat pad weight. MMA also produced gastrointestinal motor inhibition and histological evidence of liver damage. The LC50 for rats inhaling MMA was 7093ppm; death was caused by respiratory failure. The author concludes that MMA inhibits gastrointestinal contractility and hepatic metabolism. He notes that preliminary research with other volatile acrylates such as ethyl-acrylate and butyl-acrylate shows that these compounds have effects similar to those for MMA.
