Description:A hundred years ago, forty percent of Americans worked in agriculture. With advances in technology, it requires much less man power to produce more agricultural products. In fact, only 2 percent of the United States currently work in agriculture. Since the grand majority of the nation is no longer physically present on the farm, our minds have also grown distant from our food source. The Cooperative Extension Service at New Mexico State University and the New Mexico Department of Agriculture supported the development of a series of videos or Field Trips to look at agricultural production from "seed to consumer." Field Trip! topics include: Beef; Cheese; Cotton; Honey; Milk; Onion; Pecans; Pistachios; Red Chile Spice; Salsa; Turf; Wine. Each episode is full of interesting facts. Did you know that the average American eats about 67 pounds of beef and 20 pounds of onions each year? Did you know that peanuts aren't really nuts? Do you know how cotton is transformed into clothing? The videos are great for the audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Teachers and extension educators could show the videos in their classrooms or with 4-H members. The information would also be useful and interesting for adults involved in insurance, food service or textile industries. Regardless of age or occupation, viewers will gain a greater appreciation for the process that brings food and other consumer products into their lives. [Description provided by NIOSH]
