Description:It's been more than two decades since the Commercial Fishing Industry Vessel Safety Act was passed, which required commercial fishing vessels to carry basic lifesaving equipment. Nationwide the fatality rate has dropped by nearly 20%. Yet commercial fishing remains the most dangerous profession in the United States. It will continue to be dangerous because vessels and their crews are subject to the whims of Mother Nature and those whims are very unpredictable. This is especially true for vessels operating in northern waters where winter storms develop quickly. No matter how dangerous the profession is, fishermen still go out day after day. Why? Because fishing is your life! It is impossible to remove all the hazards associated with commercial fishing, whether those hazards are fishing gear or human factors. Due to the high risk, it is imperative that fishermen minimize the chances of an accident occurring, and be prepared if something does go wrong. That's why Beating the Odds on Northern Waters was written-to provide the tools necessary to beat the odds. If you are a vessel owner, you must provide a seaworthy, safe vessel. If you are an operator, you must display sound judgment and establish procedures that make safety the primary consideration when the vessel is operating. If you are a crew member, you are responsible for your safety. Every person on board must look out for each other. Beating the Odds on Northern Waters has something for everyone on board -whether you are a vessel owner, operator, or crew member. Being a successful commercial fisherman is demanding work. No matter how many years experience someone has, there is still more that can be learned about the trade. But catching fish is only part of working at sea. Being safe should be the number-one priority. Every operation has room for improvement in safety. Never take safety for granted. After reading Beating the Odds on Northern Waters, institute your own safety practices - require every member of the crew to wear a PFD any time they are on deck, and require a buddy system at night. Know what safety equipment is required on your fishing vessel, keep it on board, make sure it will work in case something goes wrong, and be prepared. Although not necessarily required, these simple practices are what stands between coming home alive or not coming home at all. Improve the chances of surviving at sea, and make Beating the Odds on Northern Waters required reading for every person on board the vessel. [Description provided by NIOSH]
