Description:In 2008, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) released guidelines to assist in the stable design for room- and-pillar workings in underground stone mines. The guidelines were based on observations of actual pillar performance in 34 different underground operations in the Eastern and Midwestern United States. In 2011 NIOSH released S-Pillar, a software that incorporates the NIOSH-developed guidelines and calculation methods to analyze pillar layouts and the effects of modifications to those layouts. Since the initial release of these guidelines, a variety of scenarios have been studied through S-Pillar, and this paper will review common applications of the software through three scenarios and one case study. The scenarios involve evaluating pillar layouts in old workings and evaluating the effect of changing conditions over time, while the case study evaluates the effect of major discontinuities, This paper will also review recent changes in the software, including a 2018 update to the database of observed pillar failures where pillar sizes and estimated pillar stresses for several cases were updated based on new information collected since the original release.
