Description:The assessment of Phase I of the Smallpox Eradication/Measles Control Program in Niger was undertaken by the Regional Office in January, 1969, as part of a series of assessments being conducted throughout West Africa, Their general intent has been to provide information concerning the success of the various programs in meeting their stated Phase I goals of smallpox eradication and measles control, and to make recommendations concerning the nature and extent of USAID support for the Maintenance Phase (Phase II).
The assessment was participated in by the "Responsible Nationale" for the Niger Smallpox Eradication/Measles Control Program; the Medical and Operations Officers from the Niger Program; the SMP Medical Officer from Upper Volta; a Medical Officer from the Domestic Smallpox Branch at NCDC; the assistant (Adjoint) to the Director of the Institute of Hygiene in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, (who had participated in the Smallpox Eradication Program training course in Atlanta in the summer of 1968); and by the Deputy Chief and the Assistant Administrative Officer of the Regional Office. Each of these eight persons acted as team leader, (either part time or full time), for one of six assessment teams which carried out a survey of vaccinated villages described in the following section. Design of the assessment, analysis of the data, and preparation of the report were done by the Deputy Chief of the Regional Office.
