Description:Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the permeation of 2- butoxyethanol (99 percent purity) through disposable, unlined, unsupported, purple nitrile exam glove materials. The goal was to investigate the protective capability and reliability of the gloves during occupational exposures. Methods: This study utilized the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F739-99a closed-loop permeation method. The glove materials were conditioned for 24 h in a desiccator at a relative humidity of 52 +/- 1 percent at room temperature. The weight and thickness of glove materials were recorded before and after permeation. Four 1inch diameter standard permeation cells (3 experimental cells with 2- butoxyethanol as challenge and one air blank) were used with water as collection solvent. The cells were immersed in a shaking water bath at 35.0 +/- 0.5 C and agitated at an average horizontal shaking speed of 6.9 +/- 0.5 cm/s. Aliquots of 0.1 mL were taken at permeation time intervals of 1 and 10 min, 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 h. The analytical method was based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) using the internal standard method (4bromophenol as internal standard) and selected ion monitoring (m/z 57 and 172) and injection of 2-uL aliquots. Results: The percent differences of the thickness and weight before and after permeation were less than 10 percent. The ASTM normalized breakthrough detection time corresponding to 0.25 ug/cm2 occurred at <1 minute. The permeation stabilized at 9.8 +/- 0.61 ug/cm2 from 4 through 8 hours and the average diffusion coefficient was (7.24 +/- 0.15) ×10-5 cm2/min. Conclusions: The disposable purple nitrile exam gloves have been found to provide no protection against skin exposure to 2- butoxyethanol, since the permeation exceeded the ASTM threshold normalized breakthrough detection time (0.25 ug/cm2 ) in less than a minute, and the steady state permeation rate is classified as not recommended. The gloves should not be used as personal protective equipment for exposure to 2- butoxyethanol even for very short period exposures. [Description provided by NIOSH]
