Description:NIOSH conducted a study that determined forage wagon use to be a significant risk of severe injury, amputation, and death to farmers. Contact with unguarded running power takeoff (PTO) drivelines has been found to be a leading cause of forage wagon related accidents. Five forage wagon accident case reports were presented with the major injury being severe entanglement with an unguarded PTO. A list of recommendations for preventing forage wagon related accidents includes equipping PTO drivelines with functioning guards, wearing close fitting clothes that are not likely to get caught in the machinery, and operating forage wagons only when assistance is nearby.
