The Recirculation of Industrial Exhaust Air

• Description:
  A symposium was held to discuss the development of technical criteria for the recirculation of industrial exhaust air. A study had previously been conducted to develop guidelines for the design, installation, and operation of air recirculation systems so that the health and safety of workers is protected; this symposium was intended to review that study, and to discuss air recirculation. Topics included the following: development of an approach for industrial exhaust air recirculation; criteria for recirculation; regulatory aspects of air recirculation; industrial energy management; air cleaning equipment; particulates monitoring; design criteria for air recirculation; air recirculation in foundry operations; and air recirculation practices in Sweden. The participants concluded that recirculation was feasible in an effort to conserve energy provided that precautions were taken to protect the workers from harmful substances. Additional technical information was felt to be needed which would include the results of studies undertaken by industry to validate the guidelines set forth. [Description provided by NIOSH]
