Description:A study was made of possible health problems at Velsicol, Bayport, Texas in current and former employees working in the manufacturing and packaging of leptophos (21609905). Neurological disorders had been identified in 12 of the employees by a medical consultant to the company. A resin called Klyrvel was also manufactured at this time. During 1971 to 1975, n-hexane (110543) was used extensively as a solvent in the resin production. The study population was relatively young, with a mean age of 32.2 years, and involved 155 current and former workers. The medical evaluation showed several workers were suffering from neurological, electromyographic, electroneurographic, and psychological performance abnormalities. In a survey of the reproductive outcome of the wives of these workers, no statistically significant abnormalities were reported. However, the sample size was small and involved a relatively short length of employment. The authors recommend that hygiene be improved at this site and that biologic monitoring practices be upgraded. This study also should serve to alert medical personnel to the clinical nature of neuropathies resulting from exposures to solvents and organophosphorus chemicals. [Description provided by NIOSH]
