Description:This thesaurus was a computer generated vocabulary of technical and scientific terms related to disciplines which contribute to the general area of occupational safety and health. This thesaurus was intended to be used in the indexing and abstracting practices for the NIOSH databases. The abstracter or indexer was to use use terms in the thesaurus which characterize and indicate the substance of the material being input to the system. These terms could then be used to retrieve data which will answer specific questions brought to the system. While the system was open ended, limited control was imposed to reduce ambiguity and missed information and assure that the search language does not become unwieldy. Hierarchal and syndetic relationships and linkages of terms were demonstrated in the thesaurus. Chemical names were displayed along with the Chemical Abstracts Registry Numbers (where available) and synonymic relationships. The present thesaurus contained approximately 15,000 main term and 50,000 subterm listings. This thesaurus is considered out of date and is no longer used by NIOSH. [Description provided by NIOSH]
