A Retrospective Survey of Cancer in Relation to Occupation

  Lifetime occupational histories of patients admitted to Roswell Park Memorial Institute, Buffalo, New York between 1956 and 1965 were analyzed for specific forms of cancer and compared with those of patients diagnosed with non-neoplastic conditions. Relative risk estimates for different cancers within a variety of occupational groups were computed according to classic case control methodology to indicate the degree of association between an occupation and cancer. The results are presented separately for men and women and refer to persons ever employed in an occupation as well as those employed for five or more years. Risk estimates for certain cancers were adjusted for differences in smoking habits between cancer cases and controls. Among the many comparisons shown in the report, selected possible high risk occupations are pointed out as examples of findings which are consistent with prior observations and others that warrant further follow-up. Among these are bladder cancer in leather workers and dairy farmers, lung cancer in brickmasons and smeltermen, and oral cancer in printing workers. Instances of unusual cancer experience in some occupational groups where the numbers of cases are too small for definitive conclusions are pointed out for future reference.
