Description:Results are reported of a survey of occupational health services for hospital employees in 72.4 percent of the 3,687 member hospitals of the American Hospital Association conducted by questionnaire in 1972. Hospitals included are non-Federal members having 25 or more beds with an average length of patient stay of 30 days or less and excluded are alcoholism, psychiatric, tuberculosis or other respiratory disease hospitals or hospital units of institutions. Care for injury received a positive response from over 90 percent of the hospitals, and physical examinations were mentioned by 75.5 percent. About 85 percent gives physical examinations for full-time applicants and 75 percent for part-time applicants. Only about one- third require a physical examination for employees returning from illness or absence, while almost no hospitals require terminating employees to have physical examinations. Only 7.8 percent give pre- placement examinations for employees transferring to different jobs within the hospital. Almost 65 percent indicated that they conduct periodic examinations on all employees. Only 2.5 percent give physical examinations to employees in selected job categories. The chest X-ray is the most frequently given test, with urinalysis and serology the second and third most frequent given, respectively. About 40 percent of all hospitals reported having a routine immunization program. Health counseling of employees is provided in about 78 percent. [Description provided by NIOSH]
