background: The long-standing mission of the Farmworker Association of Florida (FWAF) is to empower farmworkers and rural low-income communities to confront social, political, economic, health, and environmental justice issues impacting their lives. One important strategy to accomplish this mission has been collaboration with academic institutions to educate workers, researchers, clinicians, and policy makers. Climate change is particularly relevant for the FWAF; warming environments are intrinsically related to agricultural production and the health of farmworkers and their families. objective: This presentation describes opportunities for and barriers to community action that have arisen during Los Girasoles project, a heat related illness (HRI) study in partnership with Emory University. methods: Community Health Workers (CHWs) at the FWAF were trained on human subject research to recruit, consent, collect data, and guide participants for the study. CHWs in three Florida locations recruited (N=198) Hispanic and Haitian fernery, field crop, and nursery workers. Workers participated for three-workdays during hot summer months; at the end of these periods, clinical researchers and CHWs discussed biological results with participants. results: Each study community presented unique challenges for selecting and training CHWs; recruiting participants; referring participants with immediate health care needs to appropriate facilities; and relating information back to community members. Through this collaboration FWAF enhanced its outreach and research capabilities; improved educational materials; and developed a proposed policy statement which was presented this year to APHA's policy committee on behalf of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) section.
